Why Do I Need an Ultrasound?

Even if you’re considering abortion, an ultrasound is important for three reasons:

  1. It will tell you how far along you are
  2. It will alert you to a possible miscarriage
  3. It will determine if you have an ectopic pregnancy

Don’t skip this important step in your pregnancy decision-making process. Keep reading to learn why.

An Ultrasound Reveals How Far Along You Are

If you’re considering an abortion, your options will be based on how far along you are. The FDA has approved the abortion pill for women up to ten weeks into pregnancy. If you are farther along, you won’t be eligible for the abortion pill.

Different surgical abortion procedures are also available at different points in pregnancy, so you’ll need to know exactly how far along you are.

An Ultrasound Reveals If You’ve Had A Miscarriage

It’s estimated that between 10-20% of pregnancies naturally end in miscarriage. An ultrasound can detect a miscarriage even if your pregnancy test came back positive. Most miscarriages occur before the 12th week of pregnancy, though some happen later.

Signs and symptoms of a miscarriage could include:

  • Vaginal spotting/bleeding
  • Pain/cramping in your abdomen or lower back
  • Fluid or tissue passing from your vagina

An Ultrasound Will Check for Ectopic Pregnancy

Finally, you’ll need to know the location of your pregnancy. Ectopic pregnancies develop outside the womb, most often in the Fallopian tubes, and are non-viable. They also are life-threatening to you if left undetected, and require a different procedure to remove. About one in fifty pregnant women experience an ectopic pregnancy.
